Who On The Caps Attends Or Doesn't Attend The White House Visit Doesn't Really Matter
Lots of chitter chatter on the interwebs after Brett Connolly said he will not be attending the White House. This comes on the heels of DSP saying he will not be attending the team’s visit to the White House for winning the Cup. And guess what? Neither of them are wrong. Nobody should be required to attend, nor should anyone be reprimanded or looked down on for not.
Politics is such a divisive game. Everything is left vs right, liberals vs conservatives. It’s crazy to me how you are apparently supposed to agree with EVERYTHING on one side, or EVERYTHING on the other side. It blows my mind that people actually convince themselves to think that way, because that’s just not how normal brains work.
And that’s why I get people not wanting to go to Trump’s White House. The facts are there- as a businessman he hurt many minorities for his own benefit. He has said many questionable things about minorities since as well. I could see how that could upset DSP and make him want nothing to do with doing a meet and greet with that man. Tapes exist where Trump openly talks about sexual assault. I could see how that could ruffle feathers. Just because Donald Trump is now the president and not the host of The Apprentice doesn’t mean people have to forgive him for past infractions, nor his current ones as president that people disagree with.
On the other hand, if people want to go, by all means, go and have a good time. It’s very, very rare you get a tour of the White House with your friends like that. It’s one of the perks of winning the Stanley Cup, and if people want to take advantage of that, regardless of who the president is, we shouldn’t shame them for it.
And most importantly, it is not un-American at all, or anything close to it, to decline the invite to the White House. Trump has said and done a billion things to piss a lot of people off. I wouldn’t go to someone’s house and fake a smile if I didn’t have to. Shit, I don’t go to people’s houses that I do like.
I’m sure Ovi will go and take hilarious pictures. I’m sure Trump will give a speech and make quips about Russia. And I’m sure the players that go will have a good time. But players who exercise their right not to go, more power to them. And that’s the beauty of America. But the goal of the Caps was to win the Cup and then party with it, and they accomplished it. And to be honest, nobody on the Caps dream as a kid was to grow up to want to meet Donald Trump. So who really cares if they do or don’t now?
